The Eagle Has Landed

Today we drove about an hour south to see the migrating bald eagles. Although we see eagles here frequently, it's always spectacular to see them fishing on the Mississippi River where the water is thawing. They stand on the ice and watch for fish and then take off and grab them. This is a particular area, near Lake Pepin (which the Miss. River connects to) that the eagles congregate every year. We also stopped at the National Eagle Center, which was really cool. The eagle below is the actual eagle on the Minnesota license plates.

Austin was a little concerned about getting beaked!!

Who are those strange birds??
We drive most of the way along the river and it's so cool to see them all along the bluffs. We pull over a lot and snap pics!

A beautiful swan was also enjoying the unfrozen river!
This guy was enjoying the breeze, sailing Minnesota style...

The kids and I had a blast exploring these "ice waves". It amazes me how the water freezes where the waves crash - these walls were about 6 inches thick and gorgeous blue hue to them.

I love the Eagles. They are So majestic. We can occasionaly see one, but never a whole bunch together. How cool. Now when waves freeze, THAT is cold. Very pretty though. fyi we were about 80 degrees today and for the rest of the week. Yea. Spring is on the way. (hopefully this time it will last)

Those ice formations are amazing. I would love to see them if I could stand the cold.
