The North Shore

This week we took a day trip up to the shores of Lake Superior and also to Gooseberry Falls, north of Duluth. It's one of our favorite places to visit; this time of year the water wasn't running too strong, so the falls weren't as big as we've seen them in the past, but it was still beautiful.

Upper Falls of Gooseberry (the water isn't yucky - this area is near the Iron Range and the rocks and minerals are that color):

Middle Falls:

Lower Falls:

We then hiked the trail from the falls, following the river, where it empties into Lake Superior. This is a gorgeous area and the water in the lake is crystal clear and very, very cold!

Austin trying to talk his southern momma into getting in 55 degree water. No way! It stung my feet just standing in it too long!

Casey & Austin on their "island".

Austin bet us $5 that he would get in the water - he won!

and you know what happens then....

Clear, cold lake water - it looked sooooo inviting and refreshing, but it's numbing!

Crazy Minnesota kids!

Austin & Dad picking out rocks to bring back to our fountain:

Our "ocean" up north :)

On the way back through Two Harbors, we stopped to see the Ore Docks. These docks are very, very large, and the picture doesn't do them justice. The trains dock on top of them and connect to the railroad, and they look like toy trains. The docks are still operational today and transfer the loads from the trains down to the ships and barges.

The lift bridge in Duluth - it was very fun to watch it lift and see the boats and ships sail through.

That was so fun! Yes, the water was freezing. You just can't believe it could be that cold.

Beautiful pictures. Water temp 55 degrees? I don't even like the air that cold. I guess that would make the springs in Florida feel warm? It is amazing to see such beautiful clear waterfalls and then the water is brown. I bet that took a Florida girl some time to get used to since we don't like dark water here. Visiting Minnesota in summer or fall is on my list of things to do before I die. It is beautiful up there. Glad you had such a good time.

The Music is great for the pictures. I wouldn't get near that water!!! Bath water is just right for me! Looks just as nice as Dunns River Falls only I think it is much warmer in Jamica. We would be able to take your kids water skiing in December here. Ha Ha.
